A follow-up to W.I.P. SD BB Senshi 00 Gundam preview

The plastic tray which I use to keep my clippers, doubles as drying bay for holding freshly airbrushed parts. WIP SD 00 Gundam So far so good in the priming phase. WIP SD 00 Gundam

The priming phase went by smoothly without hiccups, but tragedy soon struck at the beginning of airbrushing phase. Being my first time using Mr. Color Gundam Color white, I went about thinning it with the usual potion as I did for Mr. Aqueous Hobby Color. The result was quite disastrous as you see in the above photo. As a result of inadequate thinning, the airbrush spun cotton candy-like floss.
The current overall look of 00 Gundam with the traditional white, red & blue paint done. If you’ve noticed, the V-fin is actually missing from the shoot. Don’t worry, I’ll get to that later and explain what went wrong. WIP SD 00 GundamWIP SD 00 Gundam WIP SD 00 Gundam

Looking at the GN-Shield, I feel a great sense of accomplishment. Reason being, it’s my first attempt at masking and airbrushing 2 different colors on a single piece of plastic. WIP SD 00 Gundam
Looking great on closeup at one side, until you moved to look at the other.. XD WIP SD 00 Gundam

sloppy masking, or rather incompetent masked has caused the blue paint to spill over onto the white portion :s WIP SD 00 Gundam

the same thing occurred on one of  the arm :s x 2  GN-Drive, the cone is okay however, the same cannot be said for its blue counterpart. See the dust that was caught together with the paint during airbrushing phase? It left behind a rough finish on the surface :s x 3

This picture looks normal at the first look, don’t you agree?  If you looked closely enough, the blue are actually of 2 different shades. The main body is actually much darker & glossy than the shoulder. You see, I was attempting to recreate the light blue hue that was frequently used by Keita but again being my first attempt, I messed up. And instead of removing the paint first before redoing the paint-job, I simply airbrush over it with the correct blue . You can see the result above; a dull,dark blue which had a glossy finish. :s x 4 WIP SD 00 Gundam

And now answering the question posed earlier, “what happened to the V-fin?” See the above picture for the answer. It was supposedly beautiful done until my clumsy hands accidentally held the wet freshly painted surface. :s x 5 Despite these hiccups, I’ve learnt quite abit from this excercise and have made mental notes to myself on what not to do in order to avoid repeating the same mistakes on future builds. Do stay tune for the last parter when I’ve successfully completed assembling the SD BB Senshi 00 Gundam. ;)

  • @samejima, @evolution,
    thanks for the compliment, almost done with it. Should be able to post pictures of the completed model by today or tomorrow.

    @samejima,
    yeah i agree, the finish with the AB is really great. I tried hand-brushing with this kit also but did not turn out as well. You will be able to see how bad the hand-brush job was when I post the completed photos.

    @evolution,
    saw your W.I.P with 00 Gundam, the customization of sawing the waist into half and then adding a movable waist joint was great. Kudos to you & thumb ups for your efforts there. Will be a great reference for others who intend to implement a movable waist portion to their 00 Gundam kit.
  • Hang in there! I'm building a 00 Gundam too (but in 1/100 scale) and it's my first time using an airbrush to paint the model. All the best in completing yours!
  • Looks really nice when used with airbrush... wish I had the basic skills to do that.
  • @Blade, @deathscythe,@Q,
    thank you all for the kind words and encouragement. Will attempt to finish it up soon and share with you guys the fruit of my labor.

    @Blade,
    even as of now, while in the midst of this project, I do wonder to myself whether it is really worth all the time and effort to do so much to a SD kit. I am still not so sure after almost completing it

    @deathscythe,
    using an airbrush ain't as hard as you thought it out to be. The bottomline is, if you're comfortable enough with spray cans, you should do fine with an AB. But do be prepared to spend quite a fortune when you start out initially. And if do get an AB, get a double action AB plus a compressor along with it, compressed air cans are useless and not recommended at all.

    @Q,
    I also sometimes feel lazy to do paint, primarily because I'm spraying in my own bedroom and it isn't really good for health, plus it dirties the room with lots of cleaning to do thereafter. Still sourcing around for a good exhaust fan to suck the vapors,etc out of my room while I do AB. When that's achieved, I should be able to do AB'ing on a more frequent basis as compared to now.

    We learn from our mistakes, don't we? There's a lot of good work there, and completion isn't far away. You've made good progress there; I'm too lazy to paint or do any coating :P Keep it up!

    At least you had the courage to pick up an airbrush & try something new. I on the other hand cannot imagine myself messing around with paints & compressed air. Art & craft in school was disastrous enough, and I sure don't wanna repeat the same tragedy on a Mobile Suit.

    Impaled by a beam saber? That's not so bad.
    Decapitated by a Zaku's axe? No worries man.
    Got shot in the cockpit? You'll make it through.
    Me with an airbrush trying to beautify my Gundam model? Hell comes way too soon. :)

    Amazing shading.

    Who cares if you messed up here and there, lol.

    Pretty sure everybody messes up, like I did with Unicorn, Shin Musha, and Crossbone. (=_=);; Anything is repairable, lol.

    Otherwise, I'm amazed. Nice shading, nice photo shots (not blurry), and nice patching up the seams.

    Yet, looking at the quality here, still stuck on what to waste my time and money on before MG Exia and MG 00 comes out: to get the SD Exia or the SD 00. Hmm.

    Anyways, nice job again! Always fun to have this website as homepage to browse on blogs and news. :D
