First Plamo of 2009

January 27, 2009 |  by Jacques  |  W.I.P

My first plamo acquisition for the new year 2009 was not a gundam kit but a VF-25S Macross Frontier plamo kit instead. I had originally intended to get this kit only when Bandai releases a VF-25S with the Super Parts bundled in. Unfortunately, I gave in to temptation because my hands were itching for a new build for the new year :p

I went ahead and straight built the kit first in order to get a better feel before deciding on how to tackle the airbrushing portion for the kit. So without further ado, images of the currently work-in-progress for the Macross Frontier VF-25S.

If you’ve noticed, I’ve skipped the Gerwalk because I couldn’t get it fixed properly onto the display stand. So after numerous attempt, I got frustrated and simply gave up on it. Also if you’re sharp enough you’ll also realize the kit is leaning to one side. That is because I forgotten to extend the other side of the leg hence the result.

*Edit: added at request of behemothzero. The comparison below should proved helpful for people who are interested to know how big the completed kit is:

Comparison against MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0

Both photos are properties of Dalong.net. since mine has been dismantled to be prepared for priming at the moment after the initial preview photo-shoot. If my memory serves me well, the estimated height of the battroid form is ~18cm tall.

Overall, this kit incredibly detailed, and hopefully I will be able to show it you guys in the next updates. I’m really looking for to get this done and hopefully be able to maximise its potentials.

If you own a VF-2 too, what was your experience with it? Share with us, how you handle your VF-25S.

  1. Nice! Could you put it alongside a gundam kit or something? I haven’t seen any comparison pic of these so I don’t know how tall they actually are.

    Also from the prices I’ve seen these look pretty expensive, though as I said I haven’t seen how tall these really are.

  2. Where do you buy your kits from?

  3. @behemothzero,
    thank you. :) At your request, I’ve edited the post and put up 2 comparison pictures of the VF-25 in battroid form. One against the cigarette box and the other against the MG RX-78-2 Ver.2.0. Both are taken from dalong.net since I’ve already dismantled mine & getting them ready for priming.

    @Remmy,

    I usually get them from Hobby Point (Tampines branch), the VF-25 was bought at HobbyArt Gallery at Sunshine Plaza.

    You can view the entire listing of hobby shops I’ve complied here at:

  6. Wow, sweeet! Jaques, personally which do you prefer? This VF or Gundam (mastr grade)?

  7. Hey jacques, it’s quite a dejavu hehe, I’ve got a VF 25 messiah last week too! And..WOW, what a impressive model!!…I’ve completed mine already and putting on all the decals is worse than die in a fire haha….but it’s accomplished….and it looks very beautifull after all the treatment….
    have you started w/ the decals yet? my advice is you should start trying to use those ones wich need water (the blue ones) first; they are so incredibly fragile that just for transforming into battroid, you may screw them (but the result is still nicer than using the other green ones) ….and when/ if it thappens, you could take it off, to put the traditional/green decals….hah….

    so, congratulations for your ozma unit, quite something photography and a beautiful straight building! =]

  9. @behemothzero,

    no problem, it’s a pleasure to be of help. glad that it helped. don’t forget to thank dalong for his pictures. ;)

    @evolution,
    thank you for your kind & generous comment. :) I’m still an amateur though, trying to learn & improve my photography. I agree with you that having the proper equipment & setting helps to improve overall appearance of the subject.

    @eyeshield30,
    which MG Gundam are you referring, or you referring it as a general? At the moment, I would pick the VF over the general gundam. Possibly because I’ve been fed with too much gundam & its v-fins from Bandai. I’m always on the lookout for non-gundam kits to build, I hate to admit but I may have subconsciously start to grow tired of it. o.O!!

    What a coincidence there! and yeah, it’s really an impressive model, the reproduction of the VF in plamo-form is quite accurate & faithfully to the anime version. The chogokin release of the VF-25 pales in comparison to this on the proportion category. And the details on the parts on the outside and inside are great too. It’s a real pity that these details can only be realized when the viewers actually turn them over, that they will be found & admired at.

    I personally have not experience at applying decal at all, despite owning a few kits that possesses them. The reason being, majority of them are still stuck at the pre-primed & post-primed stage. Therefore, I have yet to had a chance to try putting them. The thought of doing it, is quite a challenge since it’s not reversible and there’s no spare!
    But once you survived that stage, the kit will look really impressive. And also, many consider the waterslide decals better that the regular rubbed-on decals.

    thank you for the congrats & compliments.

    @Ultimate Coordinator,
    congratulation on the completion of your VF-25 Alto custom. Looks great despite not being painted on. I’m too excited about the news on the release of the super packs, but I have to wait till late March or April before it reaches my shore.

  10. Yeah, with the general MGs, but maybe with the recent release. And how about comparing it with MG details and poseability, which is better? Sorry if i too much ask..hehe. . I m really want this VF, but if the details are worse than MG, i’d rather skip it, hehe

  11. @eyeshield30,

    detail-wise, I would say that this kit is superior compared to the share of MGs I’ve seen so far. (Unicorn, Musha, Crossbone Full Cloth, God/Burning Gudam) Since the VF packs more details on its exteriors/armor (similar to plane models & warships, where there are lots of panel lines covering the entire body) compared to MGs usually having these on their skeletons instead.

    Poseability-wise, the current batch of MGs would probably win hands-down. But that doesn’t mean the VF is in anyway inferior. The articulation of the transformation is great with a minimal part-swapping, while staying true & accurate to the VF’s fighter & battroid proportions. There is little, if not almost no waist movement which is to be expected if guess. Also the top of the legs cannot be raised due to the vents on the top of the thighs and the sides of the waist, blocking & restricting any possible movements.

    To help with your decision better, you can head over to Actar’s post on Bandai’s VF-25S 1/72 Model from Macross Frontier since mine is still stuck on the airbrushing stage at the moment, with only the grey portions done.

    Hope these helps. :)

  12. Yeah! I already read Actar’s review and made a purchase after that. Thanks to yours and actar’s reviews. I’m bought Alto one ^^ cause there still haven’t Michel and Luca.
    Oh yeah, when the super packs/armored pack will be released? They will release separate pack too right?

  13. @eyeshield30,

    the VF-25 Super Messiah Alto’s unit seems to be schedule for release on 19th this month and Ozma Super Messiah is set for March. While Luca’s with Ghost units is scheduled on 26th, (standalone) Super parts also on 26th this month and finally Michael’s is on April.

    looking forward to see your build. :)

  14. Wussh..damn bandai! They already have strategy to milking our pocket besides “ton of 2009 gunpla” strategy…hahaha

  15. Finally, Alto arrived..yay!
    So i started to build it right away and realize…there are shit-loads of panel lines and marking.
    It’s really frightening me ^^;
    one question, this is my first time encountering water decals, how to apply it , Jaques?

    [Reply]

  16. @eyeshield30,

    truth to be told, I haven’t had any experience nor have I done any application of water-slide decals on my gunpla kit before. (thanks to my slow progress with my paint job which seems to take forever)

    But I’ve some resources listed below which should help you adequately with your problems.

    Applying decals from FichtenFoo

    Applying Water Slide Decals from The Ghost of Zeon

  17. Hey, thanks for the sources Jaques!
    I’ve already read it, and… still afraid to applying it ^^;
    i see it so fragile, i will gathering courage for moment, hehe
    oh yeah, does Top Coat will cover it nicely?
    thanks anyway

  18. So far your Ozma Valkyrie is looking good. I’m quite suprise how detailed this kit is. I can’t wait for final result of your work on this plamo.
    Recently I started watching Macross Frontier because Gundam 00 have end up and I wanted to watch some good mecha anime and decided to try a title from Macross universe. I have to say that I like it very much, animation is very good, music made by Yoko Kanno gorgeous (I ordered Nyan Tama vocal collection from it ^^ ) and story good. I also like mecha design from this series and wanted to add to my collection one of the Valkyries from this anime. And so I’m curently thinking about buying 1/72 VF-25F MESSIAH VALKYRIE ALTO CUSTOM . It would be my first plamo in this year (also first non-gundam in my collection) and hope that at the end of this week I will order it from Rainbow10 ^^ .

  19. @Paliodor,

    yes indeed, the kit is very detail. Bandai did not scrimp on the details at all; you can see the detail even in the underskirt of the parts. It’s really amazing. Glad you loved the series and it’s accompanying music and songs.

    I also read about your recent acquisition of Nyan Tama vocal collection in your post. Hope to see your completed VF25 kit soon too ;)

    @eyeshield30,

    ain’t too sure of the topcoat portion though yet to complete my VF at the moment after so many months ^^’ And I see you’ve completed your VF25 really well. Good job there!.
