Mobile Suit Gundam 0081

February 23, 2009 |  by Jacques  |  Misc

If you are wondering what “Mobile Suit Gundam 0081″ is? It is the tentative name I’m giving for the next Gundam series since the actual title still remains unknown at the moment.

As you may have already guessed, the ‘name’ has given away where this new series will take place; Universal Century 0081.

It is set 1 year after the war where the world is regaining peace. However, small-scale battles from resisting Zeon remnants continued in various places. To tackle this, the Earth Federation are conducting out a clean-up operation on these Zeon remnants. Caught in the midst, is a verteran Earth Federation soldier with is assigned to this operation.  On the opposite side of the battlefield, are a group of young Zeon officers executing their secret strategy for the revival of Zeon.

Below are the rest of the details regarding this upcoming new series:

Mechanic Design: Katoki Hajime

Character Design: Suzuki Tatsuya

alt=
Mobile Suit: Phantom Gundam Unit No.7

Our cast for the show:

Earth Federation Phantom Sweep Team

alt=

Hughes Curro
Male. Age 32.
A veteran officer who leads the Phantom Sweep special forces unit charged with hunting for Zeon remnants. He has a bitter experience in which his unit was annihilated in the past.

Sherry Allison
Female. Age 24.
She was serving as a test pilot but was assigned to the special forces unit as a replacement.

Zeon Forces Invincible Knights

alt=

Erik Blanque
Male. Age 20.
A young officer whose family is a distinguished family in the Principality of Zeon. He takes command of the “Invincible Knights” in order to execute a counterattack operation against the Earth Federation Forces.

The below MS details and information are taken via MAHQ.net

FA-78-3 Phantom Gundam Unit No.7 (Inset, Left)
The FA-78-3 Full Armor 7th Gundam is the armor-equipped space combat version of the RX-78-7 7th Gundam. Unlike the previous FA-78-1 Full Armor Gundam, the Full Armor 7th Gundam is able to fight without any drop in performance. This is accomplished with the addition of sub generators and propellant tanks in the Full Armor components. The emphasis of the Full Armor components is offensive power rather than defensive power. This is reflected in the armaments, which include vulcan guns, beam sabers, hand beam guns and a beam shot cannon. However, since the One Year War ends with only the 7th Gundam’s basic frame being completed, the Full Armor components are never built. Incidentally, the name does not mean “Full Armor Gundam #7″ but rather “Gundam #7 Full Armor parts.” There are only two previous Full Armor Gundams: the FA-78-1 Full Armor Gundam and the FA-78-2 Heavy Gundam.

R-78-7 Gundam Unit No.7 (Inset,Right)
As the focus of the One Year War shifts into space, the Earth Federation begins designing a new Gundam for space combat, and the end result is the RX-78-7 7th Gundam. The 7th Gundam is designed to equip Full Armor parts, and as a result the body is covered with mounting latches. The powerplant is more powerful than that of the RX-78-2 Gundam, however, there are sub generators installed in the Full Armor parts to not allow a drop in useable time. The body is in the class of the RX-78NT-1 Gundam “Alex” and is similarly equipped with magnetic coating and a panoramic monitor/linear seat cockpit. Unfortunately, the One Year War ends with only the basic frame of the 7th Gundam completed.

alt=

HFA-78-3 Heavy Full Armor Gundam

The Heavy Full Armor Gundam is the ultimate evolution of the RX-78-7 7th Gundam. This unit is the FA-78-3 Full Armor 7th Gundam with the addition of a mega beam cannon unit. The addition of the cannon gives it the same power as a battleship. The mega beam cannon unit is equipped with a large-sized generator, propellant tanks and additional verniers. There would be no equal to this and no loss in performance at all. However, this design is proposed shortly before the end of the One Year War. With only the basic frame of the 7th Gundam being completed, this powerful addition is never built. It is believed that this unit’s concept is inherited years later by the RX-78GP03 Gundam “Dendrobium Orchis.”

And so it turned out to be somewhat different from what majority of us were expecting. Instead of a UC Unicorn/UC0096 animated series, Bandai has threw us a surprise by going  backwards instead & give us UC0081. Though somewhat disappointed that Gundam Unicorn didn’t make it, but I looking forward to the new series, carrying hopes that it’ll be like the 08th MS team & MS Igloo; with the war & battle going on more realistic, rather than having someone or something being too overwhelming and goes on to pawn everyone on the field which we have been having for the past 2 series.

What are your thoughts and feeling for this new series announced by Bandai? Are you for, or are you against this?

  • @frank, @DwD,

    I guess everyone has their own different tastes and views, so we'll just have to accept it that way and it would be pointless to force them to accept our views if they aren't willing to sit down and listen before considering if what said is true or valid.
  • DwD
    I do not under stand why you guys are rubbishing UC Gundam and this new 0081 series. Im an old school fan at the age of 21 and said HELL YEAH to a Zeon vs Federation straight after the one year war and a 32 year old veteran over a kit. Unicorn and a 3rd seed would be rubbish...
  • frank
    yes, finally another UC story. been waiting forever for this. Was hoping the x-bone, unicorn, or something that follows V Gundam tho. OR even Hathaway's Flash in anime would be awesome.

    looks like the main title Gundam pilot will be a female like the Alex NT-1?

    as much as I like the SEEDs (because of the mecha design) the show was nothing more than a re-telling of the entire UC story for modern generation. for example, main character stumble into the Gundam (Amuro vs Kira), earth Gundam prototype gets stolen (zeta's MK2 vs seed's crap load of gundams), psycho gundam vs Destroy, Fin Funnel vs Dragoon, Char vs Athrun, and they've got to thrown in a gold plated machine somewhere to play homage to Hyaku Shiki. Shin's character was pretty much the combination of Camille and Judo which makes him even more annoying. also the switching Gundam in mid season wasn't anything new either since Zeta.

    gundam vs gundam fights or not isn't a major issue for me. IMO it's about the competition having the same chance of defeating the main character as the next guy. This the main reason I don't really like Wing and 00 which is just a new way of re-telling the WING story. I didn't even watch 00 as a Gundam series instead I just looked at it as a anime with decent mecha and gruesome deaths (which makes it fun to watch)
  • @aptkane,
    sorry for the overdue reply. Thanks for accepting the exchange :)
    It's really heartening for me to hear that you enjoy this place.

    @Sei,
    it is as Aptkane has pointed out, Amuro is still under 'house arrest' at that time. But a cameo is still possible.

    nothing yet on the Banshee. Will keep you update with a post once there's one. ;)
  • No, Amuro would be under house "supervision" at this time (or as its rightly called House Arrest). The Feds feared what would happen if Amuro would turn on them, so insisted he stay in a house under continued guard by Fed soldiers.

    He could make a Cameo appearance though. That wouldn't surprise me.
  • Oh man, awesome! This should be a great addition to the UC time line, plus the RX-78-7's new look is fantastic!

    Link Exchange would be a great idea! I'll set it up tomorrow on my site, let me know if you need a banner.

    Thanks!

    (ps., big fan of your site by the way!)
  • Sei
    Gundam 0081 ? just after NT-1 Alex then ? i wonder if Amuro returns... hehehe. btw, any info on Unicorn Banshee ?
  • @EXkurogane,

    same thoughts here, was thinking about Unicorn or the 'rumored' 3rd Seed series. I guess Bandai had us all fooled.

    I just hope that they can keep the MS all fighting on level grounds in future instead of making one to overwhelming

    @Leucarum,

    yes, it might take some time to get used to this 'classic' design. Unicorn's failure to make into an animated series is a real pity indeed.

    @behemothzero, @ashmeister, @Satria Singit

    since it's the 30th anniversary, they may be going back to Gundam's root & pay tribute to the series as what Satria Singit has mentioned. Satria Singit, great insight there on the possible reasons why Bandai chose UC 0081.

    @J-Lead,

    good points there. It's true that we are all disappointed with Unicorn Gundam not making the cut, but I believed we should be fair and wait till the new series is out before making our judgment. I'm more than happy to see how it turns out eventually.

    Gundam vs Gundam idea is look good, but overuse/overdose of it will eventually turn people off; in Seed, we had too many Gundams flying around, making it look a kinda cheap like MP grunts. Gundam just don't look special anymore because there's simply too many of them.

    I would personally prefer having Gundam facing off with non-Gundam units, they may not be gundam but they are capable of standing up to it, fighting on level terms as seen in previous UCs. The point is, you do not necessarily need a Gundam to take on a Gundam. And with regards to battle sequences, it all comes down to how the animators choreograph the actions & fights to make it great.

    @yasser anas, @Frito, @behemothzero,

    a remake of the original series with today's technology sounds like a better and more fitting tribute to the 30th anniversary. But the truth is, I believe that no matter which direction or series that Bandai chooses, there will be grumbles here and there, it's just not possible to make a decision that will keep everyone happy & satisfied.

    @Aulon,

    same here. Crossbone is also another series I hoped that will eventually make it to the animated series.

    @sandrum,

    same here, I wasn't expecting this much of negative feedback. And great note & mention there. It would seems that in our haste of voicing our displeasure and disappointment, we've forgotten that it's been 15 years since the UC was animated.

    @gordon,

    exactly!

    @pled,
    whether it's an OVA,26episode or 52episodes series, I just pray that the story will be played out evenly with good pacing, allowing sufficient time for character/plot development. The current 00 series even with 2 seasons of 25/26 episodes looks awfully rushed and unpolished; almost like a repeat of what happened to Code Geass.
  • pled
    This will gonna be a series? Or OVA?
    ...
    I hope it's OVA or short stories (20-ish episodes)
    I don't have anything against any UC Gundam but well, I'm a bit tired of it.
    Moreover it's UC 0081, we'll probably see more GMs, Guncannon, Zakus, Goufs, Doms, Gelgoogs, and other first Gundam' mass produced MS. Or Kampfer.

    As said by a lot other people here, I also want to see Gundam Unicorn anime badly.
    Guess we can't see it until few years later.

    Sunrise basically want to attract older Gundam fans (especially UC) again.
  • Al
    When you think about the demographics of the fan base of Universal Century, it makes sense to make a series based on UC in this economic times which is kind of depressing. A UC based seires will bring back good memories of the good times in the 70's and 80's. I'm in my 30's, have watched the first Gundam in my teens. Although I really enjoy watching 00, it just do not "click" with me as well as a UC based seires. Also, the new UC series will give a little boost to the MG gunpla's (which are mostly UC based). Thumbs up to the maketing team in Sunrise/Bandai.
  • Passerby
    @eyeshield30: that's okay, i could understand that even though ms igloo used 3d graph, it has 8th ms team-like battle and the fact that the characters doesn't looked as if they were made by japanese corporations. Oh, and i totally agree with you regarding macross f's battles, they are fluid as they are exciting ;). But i still prefer gundam in 2d. I mean, 00 is in 2d and their battles are also exciting, although not as exciting as macross f's, but that's just my opinion. peace :)
  • looking at the feedback, all i can say is sunrise can't please everyone.
  • Hope to see a few custom/prototype GMs and Kampfers.
  • Q
    One thing that bothers me, is that why did they decide to finish off RX-78-7 and use it to clear off the Zeon remnants while the war is over and the grunts could do the job as well? It kinda contradicts to how a lot of other projects were cancelled due to the end of war.
  • behemothzero
    @sandrum:

    Some of those people have only been watching Gundam for ten or so years, so I understand if they are tired of UC because a third to almost half of what they've watched is from it. Doesn't matter if UC was three decades ago - when someone watches three decades of Gundam in a relatively short span of time and a good chunk of it is from the same continuum, it's easy to get tired of it.
  • Muhammad Izzat Ibrahim
    This is gonna be great.I'll watch it as long as im finished watching Gundam 00
  • @passerby, yea, i know that. But, i don't need full 3d graph, IMO, it's ugly, really. The 3d characters just doesn't fit Japanese voice (Ms Igloo). I'm just want to see fast-paced battle with cell shade mech like in Macross afterall. Hehe just an opinion ^^
  • EXkurogane
    I hope the Gundams pics shown in this page may be of better quality and resolution in the series using the latest animating technology, i.e. look better like the graphics in Gundam 00.
  • I'm surprised at all of the negative feedback thus far. There are some comments both here and on other sites that make it sound like Sunrise has been making UC anime nonstop for the past 30 years, when it's been almost 15 years since anything UC has been animated. Like many others though, I was hoping for some late UC development but I welcome the change from the recent Gundam additions since 2000. This may still be interesting.
  • Izzat
    I'll watch it as long im finished watching Gundam 00
  • Passerby
    Looks promising, but i'll pass, since i don't follow UC series (unless you had to include 8th MS team, which is a sidestory). Anyway, i can't agree with you, eyeshield30, because IMHO, 2d animation are gundam's signature. I mean, there's MS IGLOO (and gundam evolve if u had to include that one), which already made use of 3d animation, but that's just me, no offense here :)
  • Yaaay finally UC again! I'm tired of ancient UC, since the animation still...*cough* not too good. Hehe.
    Though, i'm happier if it is Unicorn or Beltrochika's story next with 3d graph like Macross Zero/F
  • EXkurogane
    Sunrise decided to cater the 'oldies' this time, which really piss me off, cuz UC dates back to 1979, so the fans of UC will be those aged between 25-35.
  • behemothzero
    I am honestly surprised at all the people who feel as I do. If I knew what all of you people would say, I'd have posted "They should shut the **** up about UC already and make a new series from a different timeline". And I tried to be gentle >_>
  • Frito
    they should just leave UC alone. stop milking the fucking timeline. i love all my UC shows but enough is enough. AU on the other hand are different rehashes of shows from the past.

    I still want my G Gundam rehash. if they can do it with 0079, zeta and wing. why are they denying our beloved, over the top, melodramatic G Gundam a fresher look and better story?

    oh they better call this show Gundam Phantom.
  • EXkurogane
    Yup, doing something about Gundam F91 is a good idea as well =, cuz' the movie sucked, the fights were quite boring to me.

    'I liked SEED for one reason: you see Gundam vs Gundam battles"

    Well, i never thought of Gundam vs Gundam battles are boring. Maybe it's because of my style of preferring 2 equal 'status' Mobile Suits fighting (of course, different Gundams with their own special weapons and capabilities) with the winner only determined by the fact: Pilot's skill. The reason why SEED was screwed up, especially GSD was the plot- many video clip shows, cut and paste scenes, and the rushed and one-sided ending. (That made me love Strike Freedom Gundam, however...) The whole series is like a remake of the first season.

    Gundam 00 was one example we keep seeing villian's MS being turned into cannon fodders after their first 'amazing performance' appearance. Examples - GNX (S1), the Thrones (except Zwei) (S1), Gadessa, Garazzo, Arche Gundam, Trilobite, & MA Empress. Well, the Regnant will be in the list later... All because of the superior 00 Raiser, 00 Raiser's role is no different from (Strike) Freedom in the series. So far 00 Raiser hasn't suffered any damage before yet, a record held by SF so far (never damaged).

    I really wished the Astray series, including Destiny Astray and Delta Astray is animated. At least people won't complain of SF's immortality.
  • I was hoping for full series (or at least OVA )Crossbone, 'cause why not? I'ts still UC so hadcore fans would be (somehow) pleased, There isn't too much Gundams (only 3) and we still see Gundam vs Gundam fights. Crossbone designs are (IMHO) totaly awesome, they have MG's dane alredy so Bandai could just re-relase them or update them to 2.0 versions and creating X2 and X3 from X1 would pretty easy even for them.

    That or full series F91, Unicorn wouldn't be bad too, but only if we would see some grunt suits action ( Jesta... ReZEL..)
  • yasser anas
    It's just another money making scheme. A simple tweaking here and there, than slap it with the ' ver. ka' trademark and then a new series comes out.....maybe it's because the current economic situation... It is times like these that bandai should focus on wooing customers like us using new and cool gundam designs. Rather than making a series based on a tweak rx- 78, they should have focused on animating Unicorn (which also a katoki hajime work).

    If bandai wants to make a new series to commemorate gundam's 30th year, just make a movie/remake of the first series using today's animation techniques. it saves time rather than doing a new story. its even better actually. They don't need to make new gunplas. The first series gunpla are already in the market! Just a sarcastic opinion. lol
  • J-Lead
    "Ok……….why is our main hero for this show GOD-FREAKIN’ 32?! "

    Because having a legal-to-drink protagonist might not be such a bad friggin idea? Especially considering UC's core audience is old-school fans in their thirties.

    " I was hopin’ for Gundam SEED The Movie,"

    To clarify, Sunrise said from the beginning that the 30th anniversary project would be a surprise. Now I ask you, how the bloody hell would SEED: the Movie be a surprise of any sort considering we've know about it for bloody years now?

    "I liked SEED for one reason: you see Gundam VS Gundam battles. "

    While Gundam-on-Gundam combat isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's overuse is also inherently one of the things that made SEED such a damn failure. The only thing that could destroy a Gundam in that show was another Gundam, and that made for one hell of a boring show. If given the choice, I'd rather it be omitted outright.

    "In other series, most of the time you see a superior Gundam fighting some sort of monoeye MS."

    Not true. See = Zeta vs The O. ZZ Verses Quin Mantha and the Neo Zeon sort, and Nu vs Sazabi. All of these proved to be quite a match for their V-fin bearing opponents.

    Now, I love how you people have voiced utter disgust with a show that DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A TITLE YET. Now, I'd have loved an animated Unicorn as well, but damn, at least I'm ready to give this one a chance.
  • EXkurogane
    @ ash meister

    Agreed. No matter how many series comes from the U.C., the whole story will still be the same Zeon trash Federation, Federation burns Zeon, Zeon attempts to blow up Earth......etc. Damn there should be something new, at least a 3rd SEED series aimed at repairing the damages done, especially in GSD. A different director'd have been enough.

    I never really liked much of U.C.'s mobile suits because instead of focusing on performance, they build a standard Gundam, and add on armours and weapons till the whole suit looks like a heavy and awkward power ranger robot. I liked SEED for one reason: you see Gundam VS Gundam battles. In other series, most of the time you see a superior Gundam fighting some sort of monoeye MS. How many variations of RX-78 do we need? That's too much...
  • Satria Singit
    I think the real reason of why they decide for 0081 are:

    1. It's the anniversary of original gundam series (which mean UC series) so why not going back to the One Year War era. (I'm personally also hope for Unicorn instead of this)

    2. It's cheaper to creating a Gunpla line based on this 0081 instead of Unicorn (anyway MG Sinanju is very cool), just little modification of basic RX-78 frame. I think this is the most important reason behind 0081, lower production cost for the new gunpla.
  • ashmeister
    Ok..........why is our main hero for this show GOD-FREAKIN' 32?! And who gave them the "smart" idea to go back to the original universe?! I was hopin' for Gundam SEED The Movie, or a new universe! Why this cheap-for-crap series?! Somemore it's 1 year after the original series! They could've made a anime for Gundam Unicorn, not this f***ing show!
  • behemothzero
    After having seen 00, I'm (kind of) sad to say that I'd like for them to just deviate from UC. New series is cool, yes, but it's the same universe and I'm disappointed to know it'll be in the same continuum as the first one was 30 years ago.

    Unless it's Unicorn, of course. lol
  • Leucarum
    honestly, I think I'll have to get used to this type of gundam design again,... Not all that enthousiastic really. It is a pitty Unicorn didn't make it
  • EXkurogane
    Great. I expected a total new series, A Gundam Unicorn series or a 3rd SEED series but i've never thought they'll go backwards at 0081. The (super) heavy armour stereotype MS/Gundam still haunts me. I hate big fat heavy-armoured Mobile Suits. However, notable improvement in character designs.
