New Year Resolutions

New Year Resolutions

January 19, 2010 |  by Jacques  |  Discuss

This post was sparked off by Mark’s New Year. What to do? post.

I’m sure many of us will have some sort of new year resolutions as we begin this new year, so I thought that it would be a good idea if I write down mine here so that when the year ends, I will have a reference to check back and see if I have managed to stick to the objectives I have set for myself. Below is the list of objectives that I have set for myself to accomplish;

To-do-list

1. Cut down out gunpla purchase (save money)
I have been buying them on impulse the moment they are release but I have not been finishing as much as I’m buying. The thing is, I have completed snap-fitting them but have yet to finsh them up by doing the treatment and painting. Although the SD Unicorn coming up in late February will be an exception. :p

2. Attempt more SD conversion/kitbash/upgrades
This will keep me occupied and spend less on acquiring new gunplas, as well as, giving me the opportunity to work on my foundations which is sorely lacking. I’ve already done a SD Blue-Destiny Unit-01 last year. Although end results was less than satisfying, it was nonetheless a good learning experience for me.

3. Improve my craft
These includes improving my blog, by hopefully blogging more often and finding more works to showcase and share with everyone, improve my pla-modeling skills which I still find them still very rough and slipshody.

4. FInish at least 5 kits by end of year.
This will be the eventual overall goal. Knowing ahead that my schedule for the coming year will be pretty packed especially during the mid-year (back-to-back activities comprising of exams, annual army reservice and camps; wonder if I could find the time to breath in-between), I’m setting a modest target of finishing at least 5 projects by year-end.

To make sure I stick to my objectives, I have already began working on some of them to give myself a headstart. :D
Below is a sneak preview on what’s I have been working on.

Oh hey, haven't check here in a while. Good to see you're making some progress with the liger.

It seems like you already painted it blue. I hated whisker-like fins on the head pieces because they were a pain to slip into the head and with the extra thickness of the paint, it just scratch off terribly. I learned it the hard way...

Seems you're doing fine so far though. Good luck with the rest of the build.
  • welcome back and thanks for dropping by ;)

The whiskers-like fins are indeed quite a pain, learnt it the hard way just like you did. I cringed when I saw the paint being scratched off. To remedy the problem, I'm thinking of filing away bit part of the head piece so that it will create allowance for the fins to move without scrapping away the paint.

Thanks for the encouragement there! Hopefully, during my 1-week holiday that is coming in about 2 weeks' time, I will be able to finish it off or at least complete 3/4 of it.

It's EXkurogane here -discus is really giving me trouble...==; the name "K" must have been from my yahoo account... Why did it took them 2 weeks to link my aacount to discus after i submitted??? ~>_<=3~ I thought there's an error and I'll never be able to comment here again... And they changed my EXkurogane name which is already familiar among the online community... =.=

New year resolutions... Hmm... i did thought of getting my first PG kit but I'm just not interested in any of the PG kits... Even if i buy one, it's between Astray Red and Strike. Titanium Sinanju kinda interests me too...

Zoids are by Kotobukiya rite? Instead of Zoids, maybe I'll get Astray Mirage Frame II... xD
  • Seems like you have the same problem as chubbybots. Sorry for the trouble there. By the way, could the K be tied to the name/nickname from Yahoo as you've said. If you were to amend the name on your Yahoo account, would there be a chance that it will also apply to disqus?

likewise here, I did thought of getting a PG before but price-wise and time constraints made me think otherwise. I feel it will be more effective if I stick with small builds for now, which is more achievable and less frustrating. Titanium Sinanju looks good but there is the usual issues with nub marks when you cut the coated parts out from the runners. I actually looking forward to Bandai releasing a HGUC Sinanju and scrap the plans of getting the MG version.

Yes, the Zoids are from Kotobukiya. Hmm.. Astray Mirage Frame II does come across to me as an unusual choice. Not particular happy with the colors, since they make it hard for details to stand out. Still waiting for a MG Gold Frame Amatsu from Bandai which will be great to have. :D

I don't do New Year Resolutions, but if there's one for gunpla then it will be to do at least 1 MG this year (since I haven't built one for myself before). Since I am still very casual with my gunpla making, I suppose improving my skills with Gundam Markers will be a nice step up this year.

    Btw Happy belated New Year!
  • I wouldn't have realised that you have not build a MG before until you mentioned it yourself.

Improving your skills with Gundam markers is a good start, I 'm sure you will be to achieve it in no time and move on for more :) And thanks for the new year wish. :D
  • You have such a nice blog, I also like how you make review like in SD Blue-Destiny Unit 1.
For resolution, at first I must get 00\7swords (but the delay seems looooooooong in my country), maybe will arrive end of March or April.
Ah, also cut down my Gunpla to one per month if I could... (because my brother also ask me to buy for him... making 2 per month)
  • I don't touch the area of painting, well think that will make far longer time I guess :D
yeah, my brother ask me a Unicorn >_< for this February, glad not the titanium one...
  • It's gonna burn a hole in your wallet if he were to ask for the titanium one. The hangar looks great but for the kit I'm still not convinced despite it being a revised version. I would recommend anyone who wishes to buy a Unicorn to stick to the HGUC version instead, which I think is more value for money.
  • Thanks for the compliment there for the SD Blue-Destiny Unit 1, glad you like it.

So you're footing the bill for your brother's purchase as well? That's gonna hurt your wallet more if that's the case, since it meant less purchase for yourself. I would too like to complete at least one kit per month but do not have the luxury of time to do so. The area I used for painting my kits is actually the kitchen bathroom next to the kitchen. Hence, if my mum is doing cooking or laundry, I will not have the chance or much time to do my airbrushing, for the fear of contaminating the food with paint toxics as well as dirtying those just cleaned clothes.
  • I actually envy the fact that you have so much time for building kits. I'm barely halfway through one of two Unicorn kits.
  • Much of the free time actually came during my holidays during the end of year when I was having a one month plus of term break. Despite much of the time I had, majority of the time was spent sitting down for hours, racking my heads for ideas on how to perform conversion and modifications to kits since I'm still a novice at them and lacking experince. Only one-third of the time was actually spent on the building, which I think was quite an ineffective and probably wasteful use of time for completing my backlog.
  • Holy jumping ligers, since when did you got a hold of Blade liger, and can i ask if the plastic is brittle or not, just standard kotobukiya asking
  • :D I've gotten it on a sale from HLJ last year during September I think along with Koto VO Temjin and MG RX78-2 OYW.

I can't remember when exactly, but I believe it was one of those series of sale that they were holding back-to-back. And the liger was going off for 35% discount, so I decided to grab it since the normal blade liger wasn't available and thought that a custom paintjob easier solve the problem rathert than waiting for the original, plus extra weapons on a discounted price. Beat that!

And with regards to the plastic, they are as brittle as before but note that this Liger AB Custom is an old one so I wouldn't be sure how it would compare with the newer Koto kits. I was test-fitting them and the plastic actually broke/tear after trying to separate the parts. Quite a nerve-wreaking experience there. In addition, the placement and build of the pegs were quite badly designed, even when fully snap-fitted, they do not fit nicelt and gaps were still evident from the joining areas. And lastly onto the pegs were pretty soft too, they got deformed very easily making fitting the parts together quite a hassle at times too.
  • :O That's Gundam Aquarius! Such an old kit!

I would want to improve my paint job and learn modding skills :D
  • Bingo! Sharp eyes there you've got. Trying to 'upgrade' by improving the proportions of this old kit. Looks great already by default but thought an upgrade to its proportion would even be better. Will most likely concentrate more on the proportion and less so on the articulations though.

And on to modding skills, I might have some pictures to inspire everyone to try their hands on modding, it should be out within a week or so. Was thinking of posting them in a series one-by-one but I'm changing the idea and put them all on one instead. Hopefully, they will not disppoint :)
  • Finally I can comment lol, I have problems logging in with disqus!!

Ah I don't have the habit of making resolutions but I am also trying to cut down on buying too many gunpla and instead concentrate on improving my current build! Hopefully like you i'll be able to finish up a few quality build this year instead of snap fits :D And what a way to start with a Koto blade liger haha nice! All the best for the year.
  • didn't realize disqus was causing trouble for you. What was the nature of the problem when you tried to log in? is it a problem creating an account with one of the services listed or was it problem with posting as guest?

I actually do not have a habit for making resolution either but doing it now as a reminder to myself. Because as the going says 'out of sight, out of mind', so keep this at the place I can see it, will probably serve as a good reminder.

At the moment, I have quite a bit of problem restraining myself from making new purchases after seeing Kotobukiya's D-style and Alteisen [Progressive ver.]. Most likely to break my vow of cutting down on gunpla. :p

And thanks for the compliment with Koto blade liger, getting pumped to finish asap but at the same time I'm cautious of rushing it and spoiling the finish due to impulse.
  • Ah I had a problem creating an account but kept disconnecting but somehow its resolved already :D

Oh the new improved altisen!! That will be my first SRW kit this year :D It looks way better than the previous release and I can't fault you for breaking your vow when it comes to something like that ^^.

Sometimes you just want to quickly finish up a kit and yet you want to do it as nice as possible and take as much time haha, the constant struggles of modelers :D
  • that's right, I really liked how the new version looked as compared to the previous release.

Where are you planning to order your Alteisen from?
