MSN-06S Sinanju with diorama

MSN-06S Sinanju with diorama

November 12, 2009 |  by Jacques  |  Spotlight

I’m sure many of us has seen our share of Sinanjus and its different variations already since it was released. But I don’t think we have yet to come across a Sinanju that comes with such detailed diorama. This piece of wonderous piece of work is done by NorrisPackard (fichtenfoo’s forum) or Karl (in figure.fm).sinanju-diorama

I’ve first spotted this on fichtenfoo’s forum . This is Karl’s entry for this year’s BAKUC. No major modifications done to the kit itself, with the exception of the particle cannon that it’s carrying on its right hand. This main thing that I would like to bring to your attention is the meticulous attention paid to the small details on the diorama.

Below, is a list of what Karl has done for this project:

  • Kitbashed/scratchbuilt main weapon (railgun)
  • Scribed additional panel lines
  • Used IC sockets to detail up the thrusters
  • Custom paintjob
  • Scratchbuilt diorama base

Let us look at the overview of the entire diorama, before moving on to marvel at the minute details.

The custom paint job and details of those hexagonals print (above and below ) are also masterfully painted.

The macro details like the above picture really took my breath away.

I’m sure everyone has already know about the upcoming Bandai World Gundam competition, and so if you’re wondering why you’re not seeing this piece of work, this are the reasons why;

  1. Karl didn’t finish this on Nov. 1, and,
  2. even if he did managed on time, the local BAKUC rules bars him from joining this build in any local or international contest prior to the BAKUC itself, which is really unfortunate and pity.

In addition, this is not Karl’s first work on diorama. Allow me to refresh your memory, with the following picture below.

sandrock-diorama

Familiar, isn’t it? This is also done by Karl. Here are some more others ot it, for those of you who hasn’t seen it before.

Before and after comparsion

The details of the cracks and broken fence are really realistic-looking. If you take the Sandrock Gundam out of the picture, I’m sure many of us would have mistaken them for the real thing from a macro shot.

What do you guys think of this diorama after seeing it? Which part of it do you like best about this diorama?

Have you had the experience of doing a diorama before? If so, how was it?

  • bad ass…

i was looking for a diorama based on UC Gundam and it’s here.

    fuck, that’s amazing!
  • my mind has been blown in to tiny pieces.
  • Hey~! I love how your layout for the site has become~! Keep it up~!
  • Mark, thanks for the support! I will try my best to do better and if not, at least maintain the effort ;)

i also have been chasing his work report.
and the result turned out to be fantastic.
in my opinion i dont like diorama stile work so much in gundam model. i love the straight standing syletto (and some action pose.) but this his work is exception. its an art!
  • 5th, could you share with us his work report? or is it under the fichtenfoo’s WIP forum?

And I agree it might not feel realistic when you mix diorama with Gundams. With the primary reason being, there has yet to be a ‘real’ gundam walking around. Unlike military vehciles like tanks, aircrafts, etc, which feel more realistic because they have already ‘happened’. Though we have Odaiba Gundam statue up not so recently, but it still feels surreal and not realistic enough. Until we see more MSs around, it might take awhile before we feel that Gundams blend well with diorama.

I’ve heard and read about the oh-so-many rules to submit an entry for a gunpla competition and i don’t understand half of them in terms of what it means, though i knew the rules are important to prevent cheating… ==

    @aptkane
Sinanju was indeed being built by Anaheim Machines, meant to be a testbed for the psychoframe. Sinanju is actually Unicorn Gundam’s prototype (yeah, not many knew about this fact yet) and it is stolen by Neo Zeon remnants later, and the data from Sinanju is used to build and incorporate the NT-D system in Gundam Unicorn.

I was wondering whether a Mobile Suit’s status is only like a car in “future”, because they get stolen as easily as cars, and seen in almost every Gundam series. You don’t hear things like an American/Russian fighter jet getting stolen right?? XD
  • Perharps these rules are applied so that other entries can have a chance and a shot at winning the top honours. If the winners from the other competitions are included, it would make it hard for others.

It might very well be possible and reality. Think of it this way, it’s kind of far-fetched to have so many ‘keys’ for so many MSs, given the cost of each of them. What would happen if the ‘keys’ were lost?

And to somewhat sum it up, if there is a will, there will definitely be a way for such theft to happen, more so if they were electronical.
  • Okay, awesome, thanks EXKurogane – I wasn’t sure what the situation was with the Sinanju.

Ha, I agree, you’d think Anaheim (who’s mobile suits seem to be especially susceptible to theft) would stop leaving the keys in the ignition! Jeeze! But I guess the Blue Destiny 2 was the first unit jacked. Still, good point!
  • Don’t talk about the diorama, all those little modifications done to the kit itself is already a huge task! (Okay that rail gun ain’t a small mod lol)

Dioramas really add life to the kits. Though I have no idea how he did that but really amazing work to envision the whole setup, how to place the people on the set, where to place the hatch…really requires lots of patience and skill to create his ideas. Man the cracks looks so real!

Definitely inspiring piece of work! It is unfortunate he can’t put this in for Bakuc but no doubt he is a winner on my books :D

    Thanks for sharing this Jacques!
  • Dioramas with the appropriate and right details added, really add life to the kits. I would definitely love to see Karl with a detailed work log of his project’s in-progress of how the entire diorama was conceptualize and constructed.

By the way, he is submitting this for BAKUC but not for Bandai World Gundam competition. If he made it for the latter, this would be a definite winner for me too. And I’m glad you all like it, will want to try and find more of these gems to share with everyone in future. :)
  • Oh man, I love those colors on the SandRock – its the only Wing Gundam that I’ve ever really liked a lot, and those colors are just awesome.

I guess I’m a bit confused by the diorama – I didn’t think the Sinanju was an Anaheim Machine…but I honestly don’t know enough about the series to be sure.

Still, just awesome. I’ve always wanted to try a diorama, but my skills with realistic landscape modeling are abysmal at best.

    ….that SandRock is just awesome.
  • The custom color scheme definitely suits it much better than the EW scheme. Some other gundam designs of Wing are good but unfortunately they didn’t appear all at the same time. I personally like the original Heavyarms (the EW was meh, and the color scheme made it worse) and Sandrock was great too, with some tweaks to the proportions here and there, it would be wonderful like what Karl did for his Sandrock. The rest would be Tallgeese 1 and Eypon.

Same here, if I ever had the chance I also would want to try a diorama at least once, but my current skills are far from ideal to take on this sort of challenge .

The best parts is not how detailed the main kit is, but the backgrounds -base, human microfigures, damage/cracks/scratches etc that are really realistic… But, why did he get barred??? That’s really unfortunate…
  • Yes indeed, the realistic-looking base, human microfigures, damage/cracks/scratches are what make me so captivated with this diorama.

The primary reason was because he failed to make it before the deadline(1 Nov).

The other reason is, the local BAKUC rules bars him from joining this build in any local or international contest prior to the BAKUC itself. So even if he did make it before Nov 1, the rules would also prevent him from joining. I’m guessing what it means is that, you have to submit to BAKUC, finish the competition before you are allow to submit the same entry from other competitions.
