health concerns has been raised after recent research into E211; otherwise known as sodium benzoate, a commonly-used preservative in soft drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max .

The reasearch was conducted by Peter Piper, a molecular biology expert at Sheffield University. it was found that E211 could damage an important area of DNA called mitochondria. he gave a short summary of E211 and effects:

“These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it”

“mitochondria consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it then the cell starts to malfunction very seriously.”

“a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to damage to this DNA - Parkinson’s and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases, but above all the whole process of ageing.”

Sodium benzoate has been used to kill yeast, bacteria, and fungi in soft drinks, jam, fruit juice and salad dressing.

some food for thought for us who’s been regularly drinking soft drinks.
