The Graveyard

Barely a week after featuring the MSN-06S Sinanju with diorama, another amazing diorama has just caught my eyes. I present to you: the Graveyard.

Don Carlo Suratos (a.ka. donc0023 in Plamo & ZeroG) hails from Philippines and he is the man behind this amazing diorama, ‘the Graveyard’. ‘The Graveyard’ is his entry for the recently concluded Bakuc Philippines 2009 and just for the record, he is also the Bakuc World Champion in December 2008. And now introducing, our cast in this diorama; Infinite Justice, our main lead, together with the Impulse, Gunner Zaku and the MG freedom guest-starring as the wreckage lying below.

As compared to the MSN-06S Sinanju with diorama, this diorama can be considered much ‘noisier’ and bustling with life. Despite being ‘noiser’, it doesn’t mean that you can overlook all the little bits of details inside. Looking at these miniatures, you can see ‘life’ from them, through their actions and poses; very dynamic, just like real people in real life going about with their work.

I highly recommend dropping by his work-in-progress link @ ZeroG, the 37 pages might seemed a little daunting initially, but I believe that everyone of us can learn a thing or two on making diorama while going through then along the way. If you always wondered about how this miniature structure are constructed, built and painted, this is preharps the best time to do so. Diorama skills, is definitely the next level for us to learn once we have a good grasp at the basics.

It's been a while since I came back. This particular diorama took me some time to look at :O

It looks like that on the ground there's something going on on every spot, with all the workers appearing to be working on various things rather than just standing idle and looking. Can't judge whether the scales of the figures are right but I assume they are (judging from those standing next to the Gundam and Zaku heads). However, with a lot of things going on the ground, IJ feels underwhelming and a bit out of place. Not a huge issue really, since it is very well made too.

Hard to compare it with the Sianju diorama, since they are quite different afterall. What I do like about the Sianju one is that it tries to give a feel of Zero-Gee with it as well as the crew floating in the atmosphere - it's something quite interesting and clean to look at too I'd say.

Indeed, looking back at it for another few more times, make me realise that the best way to enjoy and appreciate this diorama, is to zoom in on the macro details of the different areas rather than looking at it from afar as a whole. Also to add, preharps it is the scale and size of the entire diorama that makes the IJ looked like a supporting cast.

While in the Sinanju diorama situation, the diorama is of a smaller scale, allowing it to complement the Sinanju rather than upstaging it.

This is absolutely nuts! Like... I don't even know how to find the words to praise this thing. EVERY square cm has details on it! If I have to nitpick... I think IJ up there can be in a better pose ^^;.

Yes, I agree that IJ pose looks kinda underwhelming, it seems like he is idling, probably because it is a salvage operation, the battlefield is where he truly belongs.

In fact, the IJ can actually be totally omitted from the diorama and the diorama will still do fine on its own since the IJ has little part to play.

I think I will satisfied if I could emulate just a portion of the diorama, for example, like the post banner picture at the top.

I think with a few photoshop touches, the macro shots would really pass off easily as a scene from the movie and no one could tell the difference
